Research-Based Curriculum Santa Ana Unified School District in California was awarded a $4.4 million EETT grant in the Fall of 2005 using Take a Stand! as one justification. As written in the grant, "'To get at matters of deep and enduring understanding, we need to use provocative and multilayered questions that reveal the richness and complexities of a subject. We refer to such questions as 'essential' because they point to the key inquiries and the core ideas of a disciplne' (Wiggins and McTighe, 1998, p. 28). One very important quality of these curriculum-framing questions is that they do not have just one obvious, correct answer. These questions require students to understand the facts and meet the standards, but then call for an evaluation and synthesis of that information to develop a deeper understanding of the content. This process ties directly in to the skills the students practice in the Take a Stand! activities." Your school district can also use Take a Stand! as a justification for receiving grant money to improve instruction in American or World History or to improve English skills of English Learners. California State Funding Curriculum fulfills AB 1802 requirements AB 1802 provides $30,000,000 for books that support English Learners access to the content curriculum. California Department of Education is currently disbursing these funds. Take a Stand! uniquely combines Social Studies with Language Arts standards, providing English Learners with excellent lessons that are research and classroom tested. California Department of Education has reviewed materials for State Certification and school districts may request funds through this bill. Materials Have Passed State Social and Legal Compliance Review Materials have passed the Social and Legal Compliance Review for the California State Department of Education.
