Take a Stand!™ for Home School

Classical Education in History

The Modern Program with Classical Roots

The Take a Stand! curriculum is Classical Education in history. It is a unique supplemental history program that contains all the elements of the Trivium: Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric.  It does not teach students what to think about history, but how to think. Essential vocabulary of history and brief summaries of key historical topics are presented in engaging, debatable questions.  Students learn incrementally the essential tools of the historian and apply them to intriguing questions.  The parent leads a discussion then Take a Stand! shows students how to write history essays.

Leaders in all fields use the historical method in making decisions. Great educators, businessmen, and politicians analyze information from various sources and make decisions based on evidence. Leaders then communicate effectively to inspire and motivate others. Take a Stand! is not merely a history program that teaches what happens in the past. It is a leadership program using history as the academic content. Students who study history through the Take a Stand! curriculum not only learn history, they become effective analysts, speakers, writers, and leaders.

Helpful Teacher’s Editions
Home Schooling Teacher’s Editions explain how to teach the analytical skills of history, how to conduct research skills, how to lead discussions and debate, how to teach writing in history, and how to grade essays.  Sample student essays, grading rubrics, and teacher’s notes are included along with a detailed answer key.

For Which Age is This Appropriate?
Take a Stand! is geared for grades 6-12.  When the child enters the Logic stage of the Trivium, which can be from ages 11-13, he can start with any of the history workbooks.  When your child shows a strong interest in expressing his ideas and shows analytical skills, then he has reached this stage.  With the younger ages, you may assign shorter writing assignments.  The thinking skills are similar in all of the workbooks, and may therefore be used with grades 6-12.

Is Take a Stand! a Textbook? No. Take a Stand! is a method which teaches the tools necessary for the study of history. Known at universities as historical thinking, classical educators recognize this program as the Grammar, Rhetoric, and Logic of history.

Cathy Duffy Review

""Here are the primary reasons why I think the Take A Stand! approach works so well. When students read and research with the questions in mind, they pay much closer attention than when reading simply to cover the material. When they have to analyze information, thinking about cause and effect and relative importance, they’ve moved to a much deeper level of thinking. Discussing their research and ideas with others forces them to think logically and critically…I expect the Take A Stand! books should be very popular among homeschoolers who are willing and able to put in a bit more time and who really want their children to both know historical information and know how to think about and analyze that information."
